Driving in South America: Part 1.1 [Buying Motorcycle in Brazil]

After Getting CPF number in Brazil (how to get CPF in Brazil), you need an address in Brazil, I used my friend’s home address for this. He had sent me the "Invitation letter" that mentioned his address. Additionally he gave me his Gas bill duly notarized (attested by government certified notary) as a proof of address. I don’t know which of them really worked but I showed both the papers everywhere. I guess any other mean of Resident address can also work because people really don’t asked me the notarized address proof (the Gas bill).

I searched for small motorcycle in market. There were three shops in Botafogo area. Suzuki was cheaper than Honda in the same segment of 100 o 150cc. I bought Suzuki 125 CC for 5900 Brazilian currency. Credit card swipe costs 3% extra. After making payment, the dealer will give two tax forms to pay taxes; It was around 150 Brazilian currency.  You need to go to nearby Lottery shop and pay the taxes. Yes there are many Lottery shops where you can deposit government taxes. After paying the Taxes, you need to call DETRAN (the department of motor and traffic) for making an appointment for bike registration, (phone number is 34604040)

Although when you call the service they give option 2 for English for foreigners but that option is dummy (you will hear some motor driving advice and it will hang-up, so you need somebody to speak Portuguese to stay in option 1 and make the appointment. I got appointment of 18th April, after 11 days, (what a pathetic way). People said that you can try again and ask for another DETRAN branch as I got appointment in Rua de Catete office branch which is always busy. I tried many time with the help of many people but was not successful. Ultimately I waited for 11 days to get my bike registered.

This is not the end of the story. I was lucky that my hotel owner insisted to come along with me, although I didn’t envisaged any need otherwise I would have taken help of my friend there.

In the office, it was quite empty and the counter lady was playing on mobile (and they gave me appointment after 11 days), she checked all the paper and bombarded me with all these questions: that I need a Brazilian license to register my bike. I was shocked as I have inquired everywhere and even in the DETRAN head office at AV. President Vergas that I don’t need Brazilian license and my Indian license is good enough for driving for 6 months in Brazil. I went back to the DETRAN head office, met the same guy whom I had met earlier and he knew English. Anyway I had my hotel owner with me, the lady went inside to talk to their senior and she came out after an hour and said you don’t need driving license to register a vehicle here. The guy told me that this DETRAN branch always create problems but I was thinking ahead that If I have to make appointment in other DETRAN Branch , it will take may be 10 more days.

Anyway we went back to the registration branch again, it was rush time there we waited for one hour for our turn. My hotel owner showed his driving license and it went smooth and I got my registration plate. Latter he explained me that they just want to know who drove the vehicle to their office and they have to put that license number in their system, i.e. how would you get to this office on bike when you don't have a bike license registered there. You need someone who drove you there. I doubt on this whole process but anyway I got my number plate fixed and my bike registration papers in my hand. We had a party that night, After all, I managed to get my flying wings registered, ride was ready so was the rider.

How to sale motorcycle in Malaysia

I have been thinking that I should write a blog regarding selling of motorcycle as I have written a blog how to buy motorcycle in Malaysia. Actually it's very simple process and because I didn't know the process, I was very concerned how is it going to be happen. First of all I contacted the dealer from where I had bought the motorcycle because he had told me that he will buy it back within 1 year at a good price. I bought this motorcycle at 7000 MYR and he said that they would buy it back at around 5000. But when I went back to the dealer, the person I spoke to was nowhere to be found and some Chinese origin lady was there in his place. They inspected my bike and other things, i.e.  my papers etc. My bike had run 11500 kms and it was 1 year and 3 month old. They offer me a price of 4000. Anyway, after one week, when I had finished all my works, I went back to them and lady told me they will give me only 3000. I was furious about how they can deny on their own words. I went to ...
