Driving in Europe part 1 : Struggle for Motorcycle purchase in Spain

I landed in Madrid and inquired for purchasing a motorcycle there with Dealers. I did not inquire with local people because I know local people don't know about how to buy a motorcycle for a foreigner. I know that from my experience in Brazil.

I straight away went to traffic department and talked to them. They gave me a list of the requirement which said that first I need to register for a national number (NES) and then I have to get license for exporting the bike from customs.

I went to the customs and found out that it is almost impossible because I am not the national. The customs officer asked me some rule that if somebody from the local can host me, give me address, blah blah.  many things (Although I had my company headquartered in Madrid from where I could ask for help) but I somehow sensed that they are not going to help. The last thing he said was that "you have to take out the bike within a month".

I started the procedure. It took me around 7 days for the NES number because I first needed to do the police verification. That took 3 days. Then one government department to another department, for seven days I would be visiting only the government offices in the Madrid.

After taking the NES number but not the export license from the customs, I went to the traffic department thinking that I will try to talk to any another person there in transport department. May be I can get some other way round and I went to other offices in the compound for the motorcycle but ultimately they all directed me to the same person whom I talked earlier and who gave me the requirements. I guess he was the only one who speaks English also. I was almost sure that since I haven't filled the requirement, he will not allow me for purchasing motorcycle.

In my mind I already started constructing plan B (without motorcycle). I still have 15 days left in my visa.

I met him and when I was almost losing the argument for the motorcycle, I put my last stance. I told him (in a loud manner because anyway he already refused so I was not worrying that he is gonna get angry).

"I am not Spanish, I'm not going to drive in the Spain,  all I need a bike and I will get out from here,  what is your problem ?"

It was a pause for 2-3 second and suddenly he agreed to give me the motorcycle registration.

I was so happy for the first time since I landed here and rushed to purchase the motorcycle, because it was already 12 in Friday noon. I ditched the metro and took a cab and I went to the motorcycle dealer which I had shortlisted during last seven days.

(In the daytime, I used to be in the government offices and in the evening, I used to inquire for the motorcycle with the various dealers and so I had narrowed myself down to this dealer.)

I purchased the motorcycle in 15 min ( the junior guy ask me for color and I replied "do I look like a girl, who cares for color, any color, ok that one ready is good)

I was in hurry to go back to the office again so that I can get out of Madrid today itself (only 15 days left in Visa). So that I thought before the day off, I should purchase a motorcycle and go to the office before closing time.

When I reached back the office with bike papers, he said "no you cannot come like this, you take an appointment for bike registration on website".

The website was in Spanish. I didn't want to make any mistakes in official works. The hostel guy told me that registration dates are available after five weeks from now. I only had two weeks left, so it was not possible. I went to my dealer again. He said, "okay I can talk with some agency. It will take one week and cost 100 Euros. I agreed and he said, "okay fine, come next week".

I had this weekend ahead of me. What to do then? I went to Toledo by bus (a nearby City). There was a museum about the Spanish army strength and it looks like they were quite comparable to the English persons at one time like in 15th century.

I come back to Madrid after two days and waited for three more days. By Friday, I got the registration news from dealer. I went to showroom for collecting the bike but then the dealer told me something which put me on alert. He said "you cannot take it out like this". I asked "why? I have a paper. What else do I need?". He said " I don't know but you cannot take it out"  and suddenly he yelled, "yeah Insurance". I said, "okay can you get me the insurance here again because I cannot buy the insurance so easily without having any card". Then he helped me and I got the insurance. He asked me for the extent  of insurance. I said that only neded the Europe area insurance sufficient because I was not thinking that I can get out from the Europe within two weeks like this or ultimately insurance will get expired. And now I was set to go and I will tell you the next blog how I started my journey.

Summary of the bike purchase requirement ss in my another post.

How to sale motorcycle in Malaysia

I have been thinking that I should write a blog regarding selling of motorcycle as I have written a blog how to buy motorcycle in Malaysia. Actually it's very simple process and because I didn't know the process, I was very concerned how is it going to be happen. First of all I contacted the dealer from where I had bought the motorcycle because he had told me that he will buy it back within 1 year at a good price. I bought this motorcycle at 7000 MYR and he said that they would buy it back at around 5000. But when I went back to the dealer, the person I spoke to was nowhere to be found and some Chinese origin lady was there in his place. They inspected my bike and other things, i.e.  my papers etc. My bike had run 11500 kms and it was 1 year and 3 month old. They offer me a price of 4000. Anyway, after one week, when I had finished all my works, I went back to them and lady told me they will give me only 3000. I was furious about how they can deny on their own words. I went to ...
